Understanding Shipping Incoterms

Before we delve into the different shipping methods, it’s important to understand the language of international trade. Incoterms are a set of internationally recognized rules that define the responsibilities of sellers and buyers for the delivery of goods under sales contracts. Here are three of the most common Incoterms you’ll encounter:

  • EXW (Ex Works): Under this term, the seller’s only responsibility is to make the goods available at their own premises (e.g., factory or warehouse). The buyer is responsible for all other costs and risks, including loading the goods onto a truck, arranging for transportation, and clearing customs. This option gives the buyer maximum control over the shipping process but also comes with the most responsibility.

  • FOB (Free On Board): With FOB, the seller is responsible for all costs and risks until the goods are loaded on board the vessel nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment. Once the goods are on the ship, the responsibility for the goods transfers to the buyer. This is a popular option for buyers who have their own freight forwarders and want to control the shipping process from the port of origin.

  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): DDP is the most comprehensive shipping option and the one we recommend for most of our clients. With DDP, we handle everything, from picking up the goods from the factory to delivering them to your final destination. This includes all transportation costs, customs clearance, and import duties. DDP is the perfect solution for businesses that want a hassle-free shipping experience, allowing you to focus on what you do best – running your business.

Shipping Methods

We offer a variety of shipping methods to suit your needs and budget. Here’s a breakdown of the options:

Sea Freight

Sea freight is the most common and cost-effective method for shipping large quantities of goods. It’s the ideal choice for businesses that are not in a hurry to receive their products and want to keep their shipping costs to a minimum.

  • Advantages:

    • Most cost-effective option for large shipments.

    • Can accommodate a wide variety of goods, including oversized and heavy items.

    • More environmentally friendly than air freight.

  • Disadvantages:

    • Longest transit times (typically 30-40 days).

    • More susceptible to delays due to weather and port congestion.

Air Freight

Air freight is the fastest way to get your products from China to your destination. It’s the perfect choice for time-sensitive shipments, high-value goods, and smaller, lightweight items.

  • Advantages:

    • Fastest transit times (typically 5-10 days).

    • Highly reliable with less risk of damage or theft.

    • Ideal for high-value and perishable goods.

  • Disadvantages:

    • Most expensive shipping option.

    • Restrictions on the size and weight of goods.

    • Less environmentally friendly than other options.

Train Freight

Train freight is a growing option for shipping goods from China to Europe. It offers a good balance of speed and cost, making it an attractive alternative to sea and air freight.

  • Advantages:

    • Faster than sea freight (typically 15-25 days to Europe).

    • More cost-effective than air freight.

    • More environmentally friendly than air freight.

  • Disadvantages:

    • Limited to destinations with rail infrastructure.

    • Can be more expensive than sea freight.

Truck Freight

Truck freight is a flexible and efficient option for shipping goods from China to neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. It’s also used for the final leg of the journey for sea, air, and train shipments.

  • Advantages:

    • Fast and reliable for short to medium distances.

    • Door-to-door service.

    • Cost-effective for regional shipments.

  • Disadvantages:

    • Limited to destinations accessible by road.

    • Can be affected by traffic and road conditions.
